PORTLAND — A man who said he was carrying two bombs prompted the evacuation of the Portland Transportation Center on Tuesday morning, Jan. 1.
Police later arrested the man and found he had no explosives.
Police said Rodney Jewell, 44, of Portland, walked into the bus and train station about 6:30 a.m. and allegedly told employees he was carrying two bombs in his backpack.
Employees notified police and evacuated the station, which is at 100 Thompson’s Point Road. After responding and closing off the area, police began talking with Jewell and eventually convinced him to leave the building with the backpack.
Jewell placed the backpack on the ground as police instructed, and after some resistance, was taken into custody. He was charged with terrorizing, false public alarm and refusing to submit to arrest.
The Police department’s Hazardous Devices Unit found no explosives or dangerous materials in the backpack.
The incident closed the transportation center, which provides service by Concord Coach Lines buses and the Amtrak Downeaster passenger train, for about 3 1/2 hours.
