FALMOUTH — Nikolaus K. “Nik” Koengeter, 67, died suddenly Sept. 26 from congestive heart failure due to untreated high blood pressure.
Born in Germany Aug. 7, 1943, he moved to Maine at age 11.
After attending college, he served four years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
For eight years he was a professor of anthropology at the University of Maryland until he moved to Napa Valley, Calif. to become a vintner.
In 1992 he and his wife Connie opened Cork & Barrel on U.S. Route 1 in Falmouth.
His last day was spent cruising Casco Bay with his wife and friends on his boat, Good Times.
He is survived by his wife Connie; and his three sisters, Monica Aaskov, Susanne Hanchett and Sabine Kelsh.
A memorial visitation was held last week.
Arrangements are by Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.
In lieu of flowers or a donation, the family asks for an act of random kindness to be made and to give loved ones a hug.
