MDEA arrests alleged heroin dealer in highway stop

PORTLAND — A Bronx, N.Y., man is being held on $100,000 bail after his arrest on drug and weapons charges by Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents in South Portland on Saturday.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland said Wayman Sparrow, 22, was charged with aggravated trafficking in Schedule W drugs, specifically heroin; unlawful possession of Schedule W drugs, specifically cocaine; and carrying a concealed weapon.

Sparrow was allegedly carrying a loaded handgun, "small amount of cocaine," scales and items for packaging and distributing drugs when arrested, McCausland said. The weekly log from the Cumberland County Jail in Portland indicated Sparrow, of Schley Avenue in the Bronx, was arrested on Interstate 295 around 6:30 p.m.

McCausland said Sparrow rented motel rooms in Portland and South Portland. After his arrest, searches of those rooms turned up 2.5 ounces of heroin and $4,600 cash.
