Walter D. Tuttle, 82: Veteran, hard worker rose from the mail room

PORTLAND — Walter Daniel Tuttle, 82, died Aug. 22 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born on Jan. 26, 1932, he was the seventh of 11 children of Edward and Florence Downey Tuttle. He attended Cheverus High School in Portland, and completed his education at Fordham University with a bachelor's degree in English. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Tuttle worked at IBM after his military service, rising from the mail room to become an executive branch manager. Always diligent, he was still working at Direct Mail of Maine in Scarborough a few days before he died.

He loved his family and friends, his books, his two cats and his home on Peaks Island, where he enjoyed tending to his rock walls and gardens.

Tuttle was predeceased by his wife, Jane Dustin Tuttle, of Peaks Island; two sisters, Winnifred Nielson, of Bangor, and Dolly LaPierre, of Portland; and three brothers, Edward Tuttle, of Portland, Daniel Tuttle, of Cape Elizabeth, and Gerald Tuttle, of Portland.

He is survived by his former wife, Patricia Gribbin Tuttle, of Beverly, Massachusetts; sons Scott Tuttle and wife, Debbie, of Rochester, New York, Randall Tuttle and companion, Catherine Ryder, of Portland, Christopher Tuttle and wife Tracy, of Beverly, Massachusetts; daughters Karen Newcomb, of Rochester, New York, and Claudia Dunigan and husband, Jay, of Londonderry, New Hampshire; 11 grandchildren, Ryan, Travis and Kyle Tuttle, of Rochester, New York, Lindsay Natoli, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kaitlyn and Lauren Tuttle, of Portland, Jake Dunigan of Groton, Connecticut, Patrick Dunigan, of Manchester, New Hampshire, Abby Dunigan, of Londonderry, New Hampshire, and Tyler and Celia Tuttle, of Beverly, Massachusetts; and a great-grandson, Leo Tuttle, of Rochester, New York. He is also survived by siblings Geraldine Tuttle Cole, of Portland, Peggy Lopez, of Portland, Shamus Tuttle, of California, Ronny Tuttle and wife, Sharla, of Rochester, New Hampshire, and Michael Tuttle, of Connecticut; and by his friend of many years, Delores Kelly, of Alexandria, Virginia.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, at Jones Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon, Friday, Aug. 29, at St. Christopher's Church on Peaks Island.
