Gail F. Rice, 57: Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation co-founder
CAPE ELIZABETH — Gail F. Rice, 57, died June 21 at her home after a two-year battle with cancer.
She was born June 17, 1957, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, a daughter of Toivo O. and Anna Maki. She graduated from Gardner High School in Massachusetts, Class of 1975. She received her associate's degree in office management from Westbrook College and her bachelor's in linguistics from the University of Southern Maine, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, working toward a master's degree.
She married Robert A. Rice III on Aug. 20, 1977, at Christ Church in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
She recently retired from 36 years of federal service, most of it with the appellate courts in Portland and Boston. She was a founding member of the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation, and was active in St. Alban's Church, singing in the choir and as a member of the alter guild.
She loved to ski and go for long walks and hikes. She was an accomplished knitter, loved gardening and an incredible cook. She was an amazing wife and mother, who touched the souls of many and will be forever in their hearts.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Rice is survived by her loving husband of 37 years; two sons, Robert A. Rice IV and Jonathan T. Rice, of Cape Elizabeth and Los Angeles; sister, Jane Caputi and her husband; brothers, Tom Maki and Robert Maki and their wives, all of Massachusetts, and David Maki and his wife, of California; mother-in-law, June Rice; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth, Peter, Paul, John, Andrew, Margaret and their spouses; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Burial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 885 Shore Road, Cape Elizabeth. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
