FALMOUTH — Fred Hamren, 83, died June 16 in Falmouth.

Born in Chicago on June 21, 1930, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a degree in civil engineering. It was there that he met the love of his life, Marcia. During college, he left to serve four years in the Air Force. They  married on Sept. 4, 1954, and lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

His first job was at PDM Steel Company in Pennsylvania. Both of his children were born there, and then he was transferred to the California branch. In 1967, they all returned and settled in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, his primary residence for the next 43 years. During his 29 years at PDM, he was manager of sales, marketing and eventually director and vice president of International.

He traveled extensively all over the world for the last 15 years of this job, eventually relocating his family to the London office that he had set up. His last job was as a senior adviser at NANA Development Corporation, lasting until he was 78 years old.

He was best known for his storytelling, his endless jokes, his compassion, his wisdom, his loyalty and his big heart. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Leslie and husband, George, and their daughter, Ellie, of Yarmouth; son, Christopher; and his stepgranddaughter Megan, of Auburn.

There was a gathering to celebrate his life at the Royal River Grillhouse in Yarmouth on June 22.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please cherish those you love and who love you, do the right thing, and pay all kindness forward.
