New Martin's Point Bridge may open Friday
PORTLAND — The long-awaited opening of the new Martin's Point Bridge to vehicular traffic could occur Friday, project spokeswoman Carol Morris said on Thursday in a press release.
Morris said opening the northbound and southbound lanes on the new span, which replaces an aging one between the city and Falmouth, will occur if "the rain holds off." But she did not give a time when the bridge might open.
Bicycle lanes on both sides will be open as well, but approaches to the lanes will not be finished. Morris suggested bicyclists use the bridge's multi-purpose path, which opened June 2.
Workers will continue to install railings, bridge approaches and landscaping. The work will require some lane closures, although fewer than have occurred in the last six weeks, Morris said.
