Robert E. Axelsen, 86: Successful salesman, talented woodworker
YARMOUTH — Robert E. Axelsen, 86, died peacefully June 4, with his family by his side.
He was born on March 2, 1928, in Portland, to August M. and Mildred C. Weston Axelsen. He attended Portland High School.
On May 29, 1948, he married Arlene E. Hanson, his devoted wife of 56 years. Together they raised three children.
He had a successful career as a salesman for Maine Surgical Supply Company for over 30 years. He retired in 1986. He and his wife devoted their time and energy to restoring Ledgefield Farm, their home in Falmouth where they resided from 1971 to 1999.
Axelsen was a talented woodworker building many pieces of furniture over the years for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, raising beef cattle, and times spent with family.
He was a member of St. Ansgar Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portland. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was also a member of the Portland Elks, Portland Eagles, Portland Club, Cumberland Farmers Association, and was a Mason.
He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene E. Axelsen; and his son, Thomas S. Axelsen.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen M. Hoglund, and husband, Clifford E. Hoglund, and Christine L. Wernig, and husband, Scott E. Wernig, of Falmouth; daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Axelsen, of Falmouth; seven grandchildren, Erik and Kurt Hoglund, Emily Curry, Joshua Wernig, Kate, Hans, and Neil Axelsen; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, James E. Axelsen.
Visiting hours were held Sunday at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A funeral service was held Monday, at Lindquist Funeral Home. Burial followed at Moss Side Cemetery, Cumberland Center.
