Calthorpe elected to Chebeague Board of Selectmen

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Newcomer Bill Calthorpe on Tuesday defeated former Selectman Mary Holt, 95-58, for a seat on the town's Board of Selectmen.

Calthorpe will assume the seat currently held by Herb Maine, who chose not to seek re-election.

Calthorpe, 53, has lived on Chebeague Island for 28 years. A native of Boston, he attended high school in Andover, Massachusetts. He has been a commercial fisherman for more than 20 years, and previously worked in sales. He served on Chebeague's Emergency Medical Services team for six years.

In an interview last month, Calthorpe described himself as a fiscal conservative, and said as a selectman he would work to control the town's budget, taxes and spending. He praised the work of the Chebeague Island School and said he hopes to facilitate progress while preserving the island's traditional culture.

In another local election, Beverly Johnson on Tuesday ran unopposed for re-election to the School Committee. She has served on the committee since the town was incorporated in 2007.

School budget passes

At Saturday's annual Town Meeting, residents approved a $1.05 million school budget and a $2.06 million municipal budget, which includes funds for capital improvements and payments to Cumberland County.

The combined $3.11 million budget represents an increase of about 1.2 percent over the current fiscal year.

Most budget articles were approved unanimously at the meeting, which features public voting.
