Awards finalists announced

Eighteen Maine firms will vie for honors May 19 at the 15th anniversary of the Maine Family Business Awards. The awards are presented at the Sable Oaks Marriott, South Portland, by the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business in partnership with the law firm Verrill Dana. Finalists in seven categories are Acadia Lending, Cape Shore, Chalmers Insurance Group, Chebeague Island Inn, Corsetti’s, Eco Kids, Lamey Wellehan, Lucy’s Granola, Maine Coast Kitchen Design, Meadowmere Resort, Messer Truck Equipment, Nappi Distributors, Northeast Merchandising, R.E. Lowell Lumber, Raye’s Mustard, The Animal House, Tumbletikes & Athletes Training Solutions and Will’s Shop’n Save.

Giving Back

More than $7,000 was raised at the seventh annual Dinner to Fight Hunger on March 10 at Henry and Marty Restaurant and Catering in Brunswick. The annual fundraiser for the Mid-Coast Hunger Prevention Program aids a soup kitchen, food pantry and backpack program. So far, the fundraisers have raised a total of $43,000. 

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

At their March meeting, the University of Maine System Board of Trustees approved for tenure with promotion the following University of Southern Maine professors. Charles Bernacchio, of Falmouth, was promoted to associate professor of counsellor education with tenure in the school of education; Matthew Dea, of Falmouth, was promoted to associate professor of business with tenure in the school of business; Heidi M. Parker, of Windham, was promoted to associate professor of sport management with tenure in the school of business; Linda Samia, of Sanford, was promoted to associate professor of nursing in the school of nursing; James Schilling, of South Portland, was promoted to associate professor of exercise, health and sport sciences with tenure in the school of environmental, health, and life sciences; and Shannon K. Zura, of Gorham, was promoted to associate professor of lighting design with tenure in the department of theatre.

Vascular & Interventional Physicians, a section of Spectrum Medical Group’s radiology division, welcomed Christy Meade, of Scarborough, to its team. She received her medical degree from Creighton University followed by residency training in diagnostic radiology at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Berry Dunn hired Jim Piraino as a manager in the firm’s tax consulting and compliance group.

Chebeague Island Inn appointed Brandon Hicks as the new executive chef. With nearly two decades of culinary experience and certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers, Hicks oversees all dining operations including menu creation and restaurant operations.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage real estate office, 285 Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth announced that Mary Walker has been named broker of the month for March 2014 for superior sales.

New Openings

On May 1, The Gallery at 11 Pleasant in Brunswick will open its doors. Located just off the intersection of Maine and Pleasant streets, the gallery features the work of a rotating group of painters, sculptors, jewelers and carvers, as well as the realistic paintings of curator and director Janet Glatz. Recognition

Falmouth Fire-EMS held its annual Awards Recognition Dinner at the Falmouth Country Club on April 5. A group of 110 members and guests attended to recognize department members for their service in 2013. Recognized were Falmouth Fire-EMS Life Members Ted Vail, Bill Lunt, David Halligan, Allen Coffey, Jim Matthews, George Tarbox, Linda Roberts, Andrea Roberts and Mike Coffey. Also recognized were Falmouth Town Council Chairwoman Teresa Pierce and Deputy Chief David Jackson, representing the Portland Fire Department.
