Falmouth assembles school administrative changes

FALMOUTH — The School Department is in the midst of a hiring blitz, which includes a new principal, two assistant principals and a special education director.

On April 7, the School Board is expected to appoint Janet Adams as the new principal for Falmouth Middle School, replacing retiring principal Sue Palfrey, according to a news release from Superintendent Barbara Powers.

Adams, who currently serves as principal of an elementary school in Boiling Spring, Pa., met with teachers, students and parents late last month during a tour of the community. She has also served as an assistant principal in Boiling Spring, and as assistant principal in Vestal, N.Y. She also has experience teaching grades 1-8.

Last month, the department also announced the hiring of two new assistant principals for Falmouth Elementary School.

Ryan Gleason, who currently serves as assistant principal at Durham Community School in Durham, was named assistant principal for grades 3-5. Jason Manjourides, who now serves as assistant principal at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway, was named assistant principal for grades K-2.

"Both men bring significant teaching and administrative experience to their new roles in Falmouth along with very strong recommendations from their principals and colleagues," Powers said.

The appointments come on the heels of a restructuring of the school's leadership, Powers said. Under the current arrangement, two co-principals and a "teacher leader" form the leadership at the elementary school. Under the new plan, Gleason and Manjourides will work under a newly created principal position.

That post will be filled by John Flaherty, who currently serves as co-principal. The other co-principal, Karen Boffa, is leaving her position at the end of the school year, Powers said.

The restructuring is "budget neutral" and will help manage the "largest elementary school in Maine," Powers added.

Another candidate search is underway for a special education director to replace the retiring director, Polly Crowell.

Powers, who is also retiring at the end of June, will be replaced by Geoff Bruno, who was hired in February. Bruno currently serves as curriculum director for Saugus Public Schools in Saugus, Mass.

Powers said she is confident that the administrative transition will be smooth, despite so many pending changes.
