Letter: Support the Clapboard Island effort in Falmouth

A destination for young kayakers learning to paddle at a Falmouth Community Programs class. Beaches of pebbles that a family can scour for washed-up treasures. A birder’s paradise with an eagle’s nest prominently visible.

Clapboard Island could provide this and more to the public just one mile from Falmouth, but it won’t happen without private donations. The Town Council recently donated $200,000 to purchase the northern part of Clapboard Island. (Thank you.) But more is needed to pay the $1.4 million purchase price and additional $200,000 for stewardship.

Now is the time to contribute. Due to two challenge grants, every $1 you give will be matched by $1.20 in grants as long as $100,000 is raised by May 15.

This is truly a community effort. When the northern half of the island went on the market, a group of citizens, now known as the Friends of Clapboard Island, recognized the importance of making it public. They have raised money and partnered with the town of Falmouth, the Falmouth Land Trust, residents of the Madokawando neighborhood near Town Landing and the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Now they need help from you. Thank you for joining the effort to add Clapboard Island to our special places in Falmouth.
