Saturday march may cause traffic delays

PORTLAND — A march by a coalition of church members beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday is expected to cause traffic detours and delays in Portland and South Portland.

The Compassion NOW march to a rally in Monument Square is expected to draw as many as 2,000 members of the Atlantic Union Conference of Adventist Youth Ministries.

The march will begin at the Shaw's Plaza on Waterman Drive in South Portland and cross the Casco Bay Bridge. Once in Portland, marchers will take York Street to its intersection with Danforth Street, then turn left to Center Street, right on Congress Street, and end in Monument Square.

South Portland City Manager Jim Gailey said marchers will use sidewalks as they cross the bridge. In Portland, City Hall spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said, traffic is expected to return to normal by 5 p.m.
