Locals impress at New England track meet

Several runners, jumpers and throwers from local schools competed at the New England indoor track championships last weekend in Boston. In the boys' competition, Cape Elizabeth's Mitch Morris placed 11th in the two-mile (9 minutes, 36.51 seconds), Liam Simpson was right behind in 12th (9:36.54) and the Capers 3,200 relay team came in 21st (8:34.86). Class A champion Scarborough was paced by Hugh McSorley, who came in 15th in the shot put (47 feet, 3.75 inches). Mike Pino was 23rd in the shot put (45-2.5). Jacob Terry finished 16th in the two-mile (9:46.25). The Red Storm's 800 relay came in 15th (1:34.84) and the 3,200 relay placed 22nd (8:37.08). South Portland featured Duncan Preston, who was 16th in the long jump (20-0.5) and 18th in the shot put (46-7). Ben Michaud came in 19th in the long jump (19-10). Michael Cuesta placed 20th in the long jump (19-8). The Red Riots 800 relay came in 24th (1:39.96). On the girls' side, South Portland's Shannon Conley had a 14th-place finish in the mile (5:20.76). Lauren Magnuson was 20th in the 55 (7.68 seconds) and 20th in the 300 (44.44). The Red Riots placed 21st in the 800 relay (1:51.36) and 26th in the 3,200 relay (10:22.82). Scarborough's Laura Volan was 22nd in the mile (5:56.43).

Two SMCC players named All-Americans

Two members of the Southern Maine Community College basketball program, Jose Nouchanthavong of the men's team and Danielle McCusker from the women's squad, were named All-Americans at the recent USCAA banquet. Nouchanthavong, a junior point guard, led the Seawolves this past season in scoring (15.7 points per game) and assists (5.7) and was named to the USCAA DII All-American first-team. McCusker, a senior shooting guard, led SMCC in scoring (16 points per game) and in free throw shooting (74 percent). She was also second in assists (2.6) and third in rebounds (5.5). McCusker was named to the USCAA DII All-American second-team.

Basketball training program upcoming

The Seacoast Hoops Spring Basketball Training program, for South Portland boys in grades 3-8, directed by Southern Maine Community College men's coach Matt Richards, South Portland boys' coach Phil Conley and South Portland boys' assistant coach Dave Cousins, will be held from March 13 through April 15 at SMCC. The program is designed to develop players' individual skills in a competitive environment and incorporate those skills into game settings. There will be two training sessions per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6:15 p.m. for grades 3-5 and the same days from 6:15-7:30 p.m. for grades 6-8. There will be 3-on-3 game scrimmages the final week. Cost is $100. FMI, 807-6325 or 741-5927.
