SMCC eliminated in conference tourney
Despite playing on their home floor, the Southern Maine Community College men's and women's basketball teams weren't able to win a coveted Yankee Small College Conference title. The men's team handled the University of Maine-Augusta, 89-71, in the quarterfinals, behind 25 points from standout Jose Nouchanthavong, on his birthday no less, but in the semifinals, the Seawolves fell to St. Joseph's of Vermont, 79-65, to finish the season 21-9. Nouchanthavong bowed out with 17 points in the defeat. The women also won their quarterfinal, 63-58, over New Hampshire Technical Institute, behind 22 points from Danielle McCusker, 13 points and 14 rebounds from Nyaliep Deng and go-ahead free throws from Esther Palmieri. SMCC's season then came to a close with a 75-67 loss to UMA. McCusker and Maria Veino both had 17 points as the Seawolves finished 19-8.
