Letter: Falmouth will benefit from Clapboard Island purchase
Falmouth is a great place to live. We have a wonderful community that has planned well in creating numerous open spaces to be used by our residents. We are close to many cultural opportunities. We have easy access to mountains, and lakes, and we are close to the ocean.
But much of our coastline is private. For many Falmouth residents there are limited options of being near the water and appreciating its beauty.
However we feel very fortunate. Falmouth residents have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add public ocean frontage to our open spaces. This simply does not exist in any other form.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful for Falmouth residents to enjoy both the sunrise from the Falmouth shore, but also the opportunity to walk and create memories with our families on Clapboard Island? The tranquility and unique prospect of experiencing life from an island perspective is something most communities never have the chance to even dream about. Fortunately, we do have that opportunity, and we can preserve it for generations to come.
The 2013 Falmouth Comprehensive Plan Proposed Policies support expanding public access to coastal waters and marine resources. To date there have been donations and pledges from many Falmouth and Maine citizens who support this cause. We sincerely encourage the Falmouth Town Council to approve $300,000 to help in the purchase of eastern Clapboard Island.
Please come to the Falmouth Town Council on Feb. 24 to preserve our future island open space heritage.
