Successful week for local teams
Not everything went according to plan last week, but was there was plenty of excitement win or lose for local teams. Every game now takes on added importance as the season progresses. Here's a look at where things stand with less than a month remaining until the postseason fun commences.
All four local boys' basketball teams are playoff-bound.
Hyde was 6-1 and third in the Western Class D Heal Points standings at press time after a 59-36 home win over Valley, a 44-42 loss at North Yarmouth Academy and a 64-31 victory at Pine Tree Academy. The Phoenix was at Islesboro Thursday, goes to Sacopee Valley Saturday and plays at Rangeley Tuesday.
In Western B, Morse was second to Greely in the standings at 8-3 after a 60-58 loss at Winslow, a 55-42 win at Lincoln Academy and a 68-63 home loss to Oceanside. After hosting Leavitt Tuesday, the Shipbuilders are at Gardiner Friday and go to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.
In Eastern A, Brunswick was fifth at 6-4 after a 59-53 home win over Cony, a 52-41 victory at Messalonskee and a 68-64 home loss to Mt. Ararat. The Dragons were home with Mt. Blue Tuesday and Edward Little Wednesday and welcome Brewer Friday.
Mt. Ararat was sixth at 5-6 after a 59-54 home loss to Messalonskee (standout Shyheim Ulrickson did have 31 points), a 50-30 home victory over Skowhegan and a 68-64 win at Brunswick. The Eagles were home with Edward Little Tuesday and go to defending Class A champion Hampden Academy Friday.
On the girls' side, Brunswick is third in the Eastern A Heals at 7-3 after losing at Cony, 61-53, beating visiting Messalonskee, 61-39, and losing at home to previously winless Mt. Ararat, 58-43. The Dragons went to Mt. Blue Tuesday and Edward Little Wednesday and played host to Brewer Friday.
Mt. Ararat's first win came on the heels of losses at Messalonskee (44-35) and at home to Oxford Hills (49-46). The victory improved the Eagles to 1-10 and moved them to 10th in the Heals (nine teams make the playoffs). Mt. Ararat was at Edward Little Tuesday and hosts Hampden Academy Friday and Bangor Monday.
In Western B, Morse was 3-8 and 13th after a 48-42 home win over Winslow and losses at home to Lincoln Academy (49-21) and at Oceanside (58-48). The Shipbuilders were at Leavitt Tuesday and host Gardiner Friday and Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.
In Western D, Hyde fell to 1-6 and 13th after losses to visiting Valley (40-22), visiting NYA (38-34) and at Pine Tree Academy (48-27). The Phoenix was at Sacopee Valley Tuesday and at Islesboro Thursday. It hosts Hebron Saturday and goes to Rangeley Tuesday of next week.
Brunswick's boys' hockey team is up to second in the Eastern A Heals with a 5-3-1 record after a 7-1 home win over Mt. Ararat and a 2-2 tie at Cheverus. The Dragons were at Mt. Ararat Thursday and have a home showdown with top-ranked, defending regional champion Lewiston Saturday.
Mt. Ararat was eighth (seven teams make the playoffs) at 4-5 after a 7-1 loss at Brunswick and a 10-2 win over Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach. The Eagles were home with Windham Wednesday and Brunswick Thursday and play at South Portland Saturday.
On the girls' side, Brunswick was holding on to the fifth and final Eastern A playoffs spot at 1-9-1 after a scoreless tie against Mt. Ararat and a 5-1 loss at Cheverus. The Dragons were at Falmouth Wednesday and Mt. Ararat Thursday and play host to Yarmouth/Freeport Monday.
Mt. Ararat fell to sixth at 2-9-1 after a scoreless tie versus Brunswick and losses to visiting two-time defending state champion Greely (9-0) and Gorham/Bonny Eagle (3-1). The Eagles were home against Yarmouth/Freeport Wednesday and Brunswick Thursday and go to Capeflete Monday.
Brunswick's boys and girls were second to Messalonskee at a KVAC indoor track meet last weekend. Mt. Ararat's girls were sixth and its boys came in 10th. Morse didn't score in the boys' meet, but the girls came in 13th.
Mt. Ararat's wrestling team hosted a tournament last weekend. The Eagles beat Medomak Valley (48-30), MCI (52-22) and Oxford Hills (48-30) and lost to Belfast (42-35).
Morse tied MCI (27-27), lost to Oxford Hills (36-24) and downed Lincoln Academy (33-24).
