Letter: RSU 5 towns will be better off on their own
The current school governance system isn’t working for Regional School Unit 5. Freeport voters have narrowly pushed through school budgets and bonds against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of Durham and Pownal voters.
Since Durham and Pownal rejected the high school bond and almost every school budget, it’s reasonable to expect opposition to future budgets containing increased debt service. What if the School Board cuts the classroom budget to cover the cost of the debt? Too many uncomfortable questions are raised by staying in RSU 5, and we risk becoming an “us-and-them” district.
Our current system isn’t fair to our neighbors, and it isn’t fair to our kids. The RSU was imposed through bad data and under threat of state sanctions. All our towns can do better with a fresh start and a plan for sustainable funding and exceptional schools on our own terms.
