Cumberland cat shelter to hold fundraising auction in Portland

CUMBERLAND — The Homeless Animal Rescue Team shelter will hold its annual Litter Box Auction on Saturday, Nov. 16.

The no-kill adoption cat shelter, known as HART, will hold the fundraiser at the Ocean Gateway in Portland from 6-9 p.m.

The silent auction will include items like jewelry, art, restaurant gift certificates, vacations and spa treatments.

Tickets cost $30 in advance – $55 for two – or $40 at the door. Admission includes appetizers, dessert and an opportunity to win door prizes. Samuel's Bar & Grill will provide a cash bar of beer and wine, and Ethan Minton of Coast 93.1 FM will emcee.

HART is a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers. The shelter provides a temporary home and medical attention to cats and kittens that have been abandoned, abused, injured or surrendered.

The 302 Range Road shelter usually has about 125 cats and approximately 50 kittens at a time, living in uncaged settings that allow them to move freely in large spaces, and play and bond with other cats, according to a HART press release.

HART took in 731 surrendered cats last year, and found homes for 611. The shelter spays or neuters all cats, ensures they are current on vaccinations and tests them for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Demand at the shelter remains high, with a waiting list for intake, according to Gretchen Sigler, the auction director.
