CAPE ELIZABETH — Janet Stimpson Hill, 90, of Cape Elizabeth, died Oct. 16 after a brief illness.

Born in Patten on April 4, 1923, she was the daughter of Don Hollowell Stimpson and Dorrice Clark Stimpson.

Hill grew up and attended school in Holden, Mass., and moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1938. She graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1941 and the University of Vermont in 1945. That year, she also married Edward Hill, who died in 1981.

Her early experience in Brownie Scouts, Cub Scouts and church schools helped Hill further her education at the University of Maine, where she obtained a teaching certificate. She taught in the Cape Elizabeth School System for 25 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of several educational associations, the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society, the Cape Elizabeth Garden Club and the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church.

Her hobbies included reading, sewing quilts and gardening. She loved Maine and the changing seasons. Though she lived happily in Cape Elizabeth, her heart was always in Patten, her father's home.

She was predeceased by her brother, John Stimpson.

She is survived by her sons, Steven and his wife Judith, and Michael and his partner Patty; three grandsons, Mathew Hill and wife Tamari, Christopher Hill and wife Nichole, and Patrick Hill and wife Sara; five great-grandchildren, Alexander Hill, Lucas Hill, Addison Hill, Olivia Merenberg and Conor Hill; and two nieces and a nephew.

A funeral  was held Oct. 19 at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Visiting hours were held Oct. 18 at Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland, and burial was at Riverside Cemetery.

Contributions in Hill's name may be made to Mechuwana United Methodist Camp, P.O. Box 277, Winthrop, ME 04364-0277.
