Letter: Bond referendum vital in RSU 1
We’re writing in support of the Regional School Unit 1 bond referendum on Nov. 5. The proposed work will address the many safety, code, accreditation and asset protection issues that currently face our schools, and the bond appears to be the best way to pay for it. The projected annual cost is relatively flat, especially in light of debt that will be retired in upcoming years.
Kids go to school to learn, which is difficult in under-heated classrooms, while sitting next to leaky windows, or in science labs that are woefully outdated. In addition, poorly maintained schools will negatively affect property values and keep families from moving to the area. This bond work will buy time for our communities to plan for the future in a thoughtful way.
The biggest risk is to do nothing. We must come together as a district and make these necessary improvements for current and future students.
