Military to be honored at Cumberland football game
CUMBERLAND — The Greely High School Rangers football team will show its gratitude to military veterans on Friday, Oct. 11, during "Military Appreciation Night" at the high school football field.
Veterans and their families will get into the game at 320 Main St. for free.
Peggy Pisini of the Greely Football Boosters also said in an email that the team is "one of a handful of teams this year that have paid for the privilege of wearing camouflage uniforms at one of our home games."
She said Riddell, a football uniform and helmet company, is partnering with New England high school teams; the uniform rentals benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
The National Guard will display military vehicles at the game. If the federal government shutdown has ended, a military color guard and Greely's singing group will be there for the National Anthem, Pisini said.
Grills open at 6 p.m., and veterans, who will eat for free, will be recognized on the field at 6:45 p.m. Donations are being collected to include in-care packages for a National Guard engineering battalion, which was recently deployed to Afghanistan.
