North Yarmouth Academy launches Lower School

YARMOUTH — With a snip of scissors and the release of butterflies, North Yarmouth Academy celebrated the grand opening Sept. 20 of its Lower School.

The Lower School adds pre-kindergarten through third grades to the 199-year-old private preparatory school. This year, 52 students have enrolled in the new program.

The Lower School is located in a renovated, 3,500-square-foot historic building on NYA's 25-acre campus in the center of town.

The event began in the school's gymnasium, where Head of School Brad Choyt introduced the new classes, the youngest of which will graduate in 2030. Then, students from the Upper School presented each of the new students with a stuffed animal as a welcoming gift.

The event culminated with a ribbon cutting by Steve Bachelder, president of the NYA board of trustees, and the release of three monarch butterflies whose cocoons had been temporary fixtures in the new third-grade classroom.
