S.P. band ready to march into fall

Over 70 students recently tuned up for the marching band season at South Portland High School's annual band camp. The season begins Saturday at Wells High School, but the South Portland band will play a sneak preview at Friday's home football game against Massabesic. Under the direction of Craig Skeffington, the band will perform music of well-known composer Samuel Hazo, including selections from "Rush," "In Heaven's Air" and "Sevens."

The season will culminate with finals of the Maine Band Directors' Association competition on Nov. 2 at Thornton Academy in Saco.

Cape camp kids raise $450 for children's hospital

A group of a dozen children, ages 6-12, have raised nearly $450 for Barbara Bush Children's Hospital as part of a summer-camp project in Cape Elizabeth. The young campers from Ocean House at the Farm spent the summer learning how to help others, and began the project by researching charitable organizations. The campers chose to contribute to the Bush Hospital, part of Maine Medical Center, and set a goal of raising $300. After constructing and distributing coin donation containers and holding a car wash, the group surpassed the goal by 50 percent.

Twelve-year-old Caitlin McCutheon said, "I've learned that helping doesn't have to be hard work. It's usually really fun. You don't have to do really big projects either." The group plans to visit the hospital to donate the funds in person and tour the facilities.
