Early success for SMCC

The fall sports season is underway at Southern Maine Community College and there have been some positive results. Baseball dropped its opener to Bridgton Academy, 6-3, but bounced back for a sweet sweep of rival Central Maine CC, 10-1, and 15-0 (in five innings). Softball was scheduled to open against CMCC Saturday, but that doubleheader was postponed. The Seawolves face New Hampshire Technical Institute Saturday. Men's soccer earned an inspirational 2-1 win over Dean College in its opener, the first time in coach Brian Dougher's nine years that SMCC beat that foe. Michael Curtis scored the winner in double overtime. South Portland's Josh McDuffie, who made 23 saves in his varsity debut, was named the USCAA Goalie of the Week for his efforts. The Seawolves then lost, 4-2, to Bridgton Academy and 3-2 to Hampshire before downing Eastern Maine CC, 4-2. Women's soccer dropped a 1-0 double OT decision to Dean College in its opener, then tied Hampshire College, 1-1.
