Cumberland council OKs restaurant permit, eyes road changes

Cumberland council OKs restaurant permit, eyes road changes

CUMBERLAND — The Town Council on Monday unanimously approved a liquor license for a restaurant opening next month on Main Street.

It also set a public hearing to discuss alternative traffic-calming measures on three streets.

James Guidi of Hedgerow Drive applied for the license for Louie's Grille at 319 Main St. The business, named for his late golden retriever, is expected to open by Nov. 1. The license runs through Oct. 31, 2014.

"Hopefully it'll be known for more of a burger-and-steak dinner place, and lunch place," Guidi said; pastries and coffee will be offered in the morning.

The restaurant, which will seat 48, will close at 9 p.m. and must be quiet by 10 p.m.

"That's what we promised the neighbors," Guidi said.

The public hearing drew no comments from members of the audience.

The public hearing on Oct. 14 will discuss the traffic on Hedgerow Drive, and Val Halla and Country Charm roads.

For several years, motorists heading toward Greely Road have been barred from making left turns from Val Halla Road to Country Charm Road and Hedgerow Drive.

Country Charm and Hedgerow can also be accessed from Main Street, via both left- and right-hand turns.

But many vehicles instead make U-turns to circle back and turn right. The council has been asked by residents to look into eliminating the left-turn prohibition, and finding an alternative means of calming traffic.

One alternative councilors will consider is construction of speed bumps on Hedgerow, Country Charm and Val Halla. These would be temporary objects that can be removed in the winter, to avoid the noise from plows going over the bumps.

Cumberland's traffic ordinance would have to be amended to adopt any new measures.
