South Portland school budget passes easily

SOUTH PORTLAND — The $43.2 million fiscal year 2014 education budget was passed 591-189 by city voters Tuesday.

Voter turnout was 4 percent for the election held at the Community Center, City Clerk Sue Mooney said. Voters also approved continuing the education budget referendums for the next three years by a 465-311 vote.

The operations side of the budget adds 6 cents to the current overall property tax rate of $16.50 per $1,000 of assessed value. Property taxes will also increase 18 cents because of debt service.

The City Council is expected to vote on the municipal operations budget next Monday.
