Spring season hits midway point
It's hard to believe, but most local teams are already at or past the midway point of the spring sports season.
Here's a glimpse:
Morse's baseball team was second to Greely in the Western Class B Heal Points standings as of Tuesday. The Shipbuilders dropped a 7-4 home decision to Camden Hills Friday, but improved to 6-2 Monday by downing visiting Lincoln, 6-5. Morse was at Medomak Wednesday, hosts Waterville Friday and plays at Oceanside Monday.
In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat sandwiched losses to visiting Cony (18-8) and at Oxford Hills (18-2) around an 8-5 victory at Brunswick. The Eagles (3-5 and eighth in the Heals at press time) were home with Edward Little Wednesday, go to Messalonskee Friday and play at Erskine Monday.
Brunswick lost at home to Lewiston (3-2) and Mt. Ararat (8-5) and won at Erskine (10-1) in recent action. The 2-6 Dragons were clinging to the ninth and final playoff spot in Eastern A at press time. They went to Oxford Hills Wednesday, play at Lawrence Friday and play host to Cony Monday.
On the softball diamond, Mt. Ararat is in the No. 8 spot in Eastern A with a 3-5 record following losses to visiting Cony (19-0) and Oxford Hills (15-3) and a win at Brunswick (9-2). The Eagles were home with Edward Little Wednesday, go to Messalonskee Friday and play at Erskine Monday.
Brunswick fell to 0-8 after a 10-0 loss at Erskine and a 9-2 home loss to Mt. Ararat. The Dragons (13th in the region) were at Oxford Hills Wednesday, play at Lawrence Friday and play host to Cony Monday.
In Western B, Morse fell to 1-7 and 17th in the standings after home losses to Camden Hills (16-3) and Lincoln (11-4). The Shipbuilders were at Medomak Wednesday, hosts Waterville Friday and plays at Oceanside Monday.
Brunswick's boys' lacrosse team continues to excel, improving to 6-0 with a 15-3 home romp over Oxford Hills last Tuesday. The top-ranked Dragons were at Cony Wednesday and host Edward Little Friday.
Mt. Ararat won at Lewiston (8-3) and at home over Cony (7-6) to improve to 4-2 and fifth in Eastern A. The Eagles got two goals from Nick Down, Kyle Lussier and Jeremy Williams, along with 10 saves from goalie Ed McGuire in the win over the Blue Devils. Against the Rams, Dow scored three times. Mt. Ararat was at Messalonskee Tuesday. The Eagles host Camden Hills Monday.
In Eastern B, Morse defeated host St. Dom's, 17-9, Friday, to improve to 4-1 and fifth in the Heals. The Shipbuilders were home against Oak Hill Tuesday and go to Maranacook Friday.
On the girls' side, Mt. Ararat sat 3-3 and fifth in the Eastern A Heals at press time after a 12-5 win at Brunswick and a 9-8 home loss to Cony. The Eagles play host to Lewiston Friday and go to Mountain Valley Saturday.
Brunswick improved to 2-4 with a 13-12 win at Oxford Hills Monday. The Dragons (sixth in the standings) are home against Gardiner Saturday and play host to Lewiston Tuesday.
In Eastern B, Morse was 2-3 and fifth in the standings after sandwiching home losses to Camden Hills (12-10) and Gardiner (16-12) around a 16-4 victory at Lincoln. The Shipbuilders are home with Mountain Valley Friday and play at Mt. Ararat Tuesday.
Last week, Brunswick hosted Mt. Ararat and four other schools in an outdoor track meet. In the boys' competition, the Dragons were first and the Eagles second. Mt. Ararat took the girls' meet, while Brunswick came in second.
Morse joined three other schools at Edward Little. Both the boys and girls placed fourth.
Brunswick's defending Class A state champion girls' tennis team improved to 6-0 and first in the Eastern A Heals after blanking Mt. Ararat and Brewer in recent competition. The Eagles improved to 4-2 and fifth after a 4-1 win over Bangor. In Western B, Morse was 2-4 and ninth at press time after losing to Camden Hills and Oceanside by 5-0 scores.
On the boys' side, Brunswick is first at 6-0 after beating Mt. Ararat (5-0) and Brewer (4-1). Mt. Ararat was 1-4 and 10th after a 4-1 loss to Bangor Monday. In Western B, Morse was 10th at 2-3 after a 4-1 loss to Camden Hills and a 3-2 setback at the hands of Oceanside.
