Alice Marie Burdwood, 91
SCARBOROUGH — Alice Marie Burdwood, 91, of Scarborough, died May 2 at Mercy Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Palmyra, Neb., a daughter of August and Margaret Helms.
In 1946, she married the love of her life, Howard A. Burdwood, while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Lincoln, Neb.
Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Maine. At their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, she reminisced that she was a long way from home, as many war brides became during the 1940s. But Maine was her adopted home for half a century.
Burdwood devoted her life to supporting her husband and raising their four children. She spent her summers with her family at a camp they built in Jackman, which they called “Alice and Howard’s Haven."
Following retirement, she enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and spending time with her husband and her family. She enjoyed mystery bus tours, going to garage sales with friends, and working in her flower gardens. She will be remembered as a sweet, delightful person.
Burdwood was predeceased by her parents, her husband Howard in 1998, and a son, Bruce Burdwood, in 1992.
Surviving are three daughters, Cheryl Leeman, of Portland, Arlene Higgins and her husband Rick, of Scarborough, and Carrie Brady and her husband Dick, of Scarborough; sister Irene Hansen, of Ceresco, Neb.; grandchildren Aaron and Alicia Leeman, Kristen and Matt Brady, Bruce and Brandon Burdwood; and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Brady, Bruce Burdwood and Brent Burdwood.
Those desiring may make donations in Burwood’s memory to the Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater St., Westbrook, ME 04092.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.
