Jean Scattergood MacDonald, 87: Happy, resourceful and optimistic
FALMOUTH — Jean Scattergood MacDonald, 87, of Falmouth, and formerly of Hingham, Mass., and Edgewood, R.I., died peacefully April 9.
She was born in Providence, R.I., on Aug. 20, 1925, the daughter of the late Malvina Walling Scattergood and Ernest T. Scattergood. She graduated from Cranston High School and in 1947 from Wheaton College.
MacDonald brought a happy, resourceful, and optimistic approach to everything she did. She adored her family and her positive approach and belief in her children made her the best mother imaginable to them. For years, she organized junior activities at the Saunderstown Yacht Club, was a den mother, served as a constant school and civic volunteer and chauffeur extraordinaire.
She began a career when her children were in high school as a real estate broker in the Beacon Hill and Back Bay neighborhoods in Boston, first with Little & Co. and later with R. M. Bradley & Co. Her late start posed no impediment on her success.
MacDonald volunteered with and served on the board of the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association, volunteered with the Hingham Public Library and St. John’s the Evangelist Church in Hingham, Mass., and drove patients for the American Cancer Society.
She loved her summers in Saunderstown, R.I., where she enjoyed sailing, gardening and spending time with her family and lifelong friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold D. MacDonald, and is survived by her son, Arnold C. MacDonald, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth J. Moore, and their family, James M. Roux, Jr., Angus Moore MacDonald and Luke Moore MacDonald; her daughter, Amy Jean MacDonald, and her partner, Francine V. Rivkin; her son, Alan Scattergood MacDonald, daughter-in-law, Amy Hurite MacDonald, and their children, Andrew Scattergood MacDonald, Christopher Hurite MacDonald and Ian Daniel MacDonald; and her sister, Virginia van Kluyve.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth for their loving care as well as her many caregivers, especially including Megan Wakefield.
Family and friends are invited to a noon memorial service Saturday at the Chapel of St. John the Divine, Church Way at Willett Road, Saunderstown, R.I. with a reception to follow at The Towers, 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Chapel of St. John the Divine, Saunderstown, RI 02874 or Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 170 U.S. Route One, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
