Paul N. Roy, 90: Navy veteran, loved working in his garden

FREEPORT — Paul N. Roy, 90, of Freeport, died peacefully Saturday at Freeport Nursing Home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Brunswick, the son of Lucia and William Roy.

Roy entered the Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater on USS LSTs 457, 458 and 46 during World War II. He was awarded an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon along with three Bronze stars and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon. 

Upon returning from the service, Roy lived in Topsham. He married Phyllis Allen Sylvester in June 1960 moving to Freeport shortly thereafter. He worked at Bath Iron Works and later for the State of Maine, retiring to Flying Point in 1985.

Roy loved working in his gardens, growing pumpkins for his grandchildren and entertaining friends and family with clams he had just dug from Brickyard Cove. In 2010, he was awarded his 50-year membership in the J. Arthur Stowell American Legion Post No. 83.

He is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Lucien and Wilfred; and sisters, Germaine, Lucille and Cecile.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Phyllis Allen Roy; his son, Randell, and wife, Kathryn Roy, of Freeport; his stepson, Ray, and wife, Louise Sylvester, of North Fort Myers, Fla; his sisters, Cora Patterson, of Gouldsboro, Loretta Dirck, and husband, Robert, of Bridgton and Georgette York, of Yarmouth; his grandchildren, Robin Sylvester, Joshua Roy and wife, Gillian, Emilie Roy, and Rebekah Roy.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, March 24 at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where a funeral service with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. Burial in Grove Cemetery in Freeport will be held in the spring.
