Mary Miller Soverel, 92

BRUNSWICK — Mary Miller Soverel, 92, of Thornton Way, died Dec. 4. She was born in Montgomery City, Mo., on March 9, 1920, to John Gilmer Miller and Frances Lillian Morris Miller.

She graduated from Montgomery City High School, the University of Missouri, and Miss Hickey’s Business School in St. Louis. She then worked for IBM in St. Louis until moving to New York City to work for Monsanto. She later worked for Wilbur Ellis Commercial Brokers and for the dean of graduate studies at Columbia University.

She married Osborne R. Soverel on March 2, 1951 in Orange, N.J. Later, Soverel worked as a volunteer at Planned Parenthood in Newark, N.J. During their life together, the couple lived in New Jersey, Connecticut and North Carolina before moving to Maine 20 years ago. He died June 27, 2008.

Soverel followed tennis, politics and business news. She enjoyed art, antiques and playing bridge.

She is survived by her children, James O. Soverel and his wife, Susan M., of Acton, and Frances L. Soverel, of West Bath, Maine. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie M. Miller, of Montgomery City, Mo., and two nieces, Mary F. Richter and E. Ann Santos. Grandchildren are Nicholas O. Soverel and his spouse, Sergio Cordova, of Reno, Nev., Ellen L. McClintock, Katherine M. Soverel, Claire S. McClintock, and Mary F. McClintock, all of Boston, and Myles C. Soverel, of Brooklyn, N.Y.  

Soverel was predeceased by her husband and by her brother, John G. Miller III, of Montgomery City, Mo.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21 at Thornton Oaks, Brunswick. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
