Portland to license same-sex marriages in wee hours of Dec. 29

PORTLAND — The city clerk's office will be open for the first three hours of Saturday, Dec. 29, to perform functions including issuing marriage licenses and performing wedding ceremonies, the city announced in a press release.

The special hours are expected to accommodate a surge in demand for the licenses because the state's same-sex marriage law goes into effect that day.

The clerk's office, normally open only weekdays, will do business from 12:01-3:01 a.m. on Dec. 29. Everyone in line at the office by 3:01 a.m. will receive service, the city said.

The office is in Room 203 of City Hall.

On Nov. 6, voters approved legalization of marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Gov. Paul LePage certified the referendum results on Nov. 29, which initiated the required 30-day waiting period before the new law takes effect.
