Bath rings in holidays with 'Old Fashioned Christmas'

BATH — A month's worth of holiday events are planned for the city's "Old Fashioned Christmas" celebration.

Christmas caroling on a trolley will take place on two Fridays, Dec. 7 and 14, from 5-9 p.m. Passengers are picked up at City Hall every half hour, and admission is free.

Voting in a window and storefront decorating contest will run from Monday, Dec. 3, through Sunday, Dec. 16. Votes will go into a drawing to win a gift basket from downtown stores. Ballot boxes can be found at Brackett's Market, downtown banks and businesses, and at Hallett's Clock.

Winners of the contest and drawing will be revealed at "Sing! It's Christmas!," the city's annual caroling party, which will be held at the Chocolate Church Arts Center on Monday, Dec. 17.

A downtown open house will run from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14. Merchants and restaurants will remain open late, welcoming shoppers with refreshments and holiday music.

"Santa's bags" will be available around the city throughout the month. People are encouraged to donate new and unwrapped toys or gifts, as well as non-perishable foods, which will go to those in need. Bags can be found in lobbies at City Hall, the Bath Area Family YMCA and Patten Free Library.

The "Red Boxes," located around downtown, are the places for letters to be dropped for Santa, or for holiday cards to go to area seniors.

Wrapping up the holidays will be the 10th annual ringing of Bath's historic Paul Revere bell on Dec. 31. Participants will gather shortly before noon at Front and Centre streets for a short ceremony and singing, and the bell-ringing and refreshments at City Hall will follow.
