Appointments

The Maine Women’s Network recently announced its officers and board members which will include: Catherine Cleale, second vice president, of Portland; Judy Crosby, of Portland; and Marianne Russo, of South Portland. The network's mission is to increase women’s professional growth and leadership skills through networking and education. 

Designations

The Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership recently announced that FHC, a neuroscience equipment manufacturer, has been named the 2012 Manufacturer of the Year. FHC serves a global neuroscience community with precision instruments and comprehensive technical support. For its success in demonstrating how a continual focus on innovation can enable a mid-size Maine firm to become a global leader in the field of neuroscience, FHC has been selected as the MEP manufacturer of the year.

New Hires and Promotions

Berman & Simmons recently announced that Timothy M. Kenlan has joined the firm.  Kenlan graduated from the University of Maine School of Law. He served as a student attorney at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic assisting low-income individuals with civil matters. His practice will focus on helping injured people throughout Maine.

Richard Fields was recently hired as head chef of Thornton Oaks Retirement Community dining services. He acquired a culinary degree from Newbury College in Brookline, Mass., prior to starting his career as a professional chef. Fields’ cooking experience ranges from a high-end country club private resort to a restaurant in a historic house. He also worked for the Canteen Service Company, which provided food services for L.L. Bean and Pineland Farms, running the corporate cafeteria and overseeing events at the conference center. 

Rob Schreiber recently joined AAA of Northern New England as a life insurance and annuity specialist. Schreiber has 20 years experience in the financial services industry. He also serves as chairman of the South Portland Planning Board and drummer of the jazz group, Standard Issue.

Blais Civil Engineers recently announced hiring Jennifer Williams to join their team. A graduate of Maine Central Institute, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Williams specializes in providing comprehensive site design and redevelopment, highway and roadway design, transportation planning, construction specification writing and management, municipal peer review services, and state and local permitting.

Cheverus High School recently announced that the following individuals have joined the staff of the school: Lauren A. Scribner has been hired by the Cheverus High School Business Office as its administrative/finance support specialist. She earned a LOMA Associate Certificate in customer service in 2007 and an associate's in liberal arts in 2011 from Southern Maine Community College. Scribner comes to Cheverus from Unum where she was its implementation coordinator. Wendy Mercier has joined the business office staff as its finance assistant. Mercier comes to Cheverus from R.C. & Sons Paving, Inc., where she served as the company’s bookkeeper. Mercier is a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University and received her degree in accounting in 2006. 

BerryDunn recently announced that Rory O’Brion has been hired as a senior accountant in the firm’s Health Care/Not-For-Profit Group. BerryDunn, is the largest certified public accounting and management consulting firm headquartered in northern New England, with offices in Portland and Bangor. O’Brion has a bachelor’s in accounting and finance from the University of Southern Maine.

Openings

Salt & Sea recently launched its Community Supported Fishery, offering fish based on the soundness of stock levels. All fish is wild-caught from the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank. The CSF will operate year-round, and memberships run on a two-month basis. A single share consists of at least 1 pound of fresh fillets weekly, and costs $96. A double share consists of at least 2 pounds of fresh fillets weekly, and costs $160. As part of Salt & Sea’s mission to increase access to locally harvested fish, and offer its members a wide-range of fish and seafood products, these shares will also include occasional value-added products such as fishcakes, dried seaweed, and eventually, smoked fish.

Birthday Coups, a Portland-based tech startup has launched its birthday coupon service for businesses. The company provides businesses a free or inexpensive way to send their customers a happy birthday e-coupon. Unlike both GroupOn and Living Social, Birthday Coups does not take a cut of sales, but instead is either free, for 500 customers or less, or $29-$129 per month. Local participating businesses include GrandyOats, Rosemont Market and Bakery, Avena Botanicals, Royal River Books and Bard Coffee, among others.
