Businesses sought for 'Shop Falmouth' promotion

FALMOUTH — The Falmouth Economic Improvement Committee has set out to encourage a “shop local, buy local” mentality in residents this holiday season, but is still looking for business participation.

The first annual Shop Falmouth event will take place Dec. 7-9, encouraging residents to patronize local businesses for their holiday shopping.

“What we’re trying to create is a weekend of festivities and a weekend of shopping opportunities for businesses in Falmouth,” said Anne Theriault, event chairwoman.

Theriault said the committee has a basic outline of activities for the weekend, but businesses have to get involved by planning events that will get customers through their doors.

“We are starting Friday night with ‘drop-and-shop’ child care, so adults can go out into Falmouth and learn more about what we have for businesses and hopefully want to shop,” Theriault said.

The child-care services will be offered by Community Programs all weekend.

In addition to child care, families have the chance to take part in activities at Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm, including the People’s Walk and Eyes on Owls programs.

Businesses interested in taking part in the Shop Falmouth weekend have until Nov. 12 to register. Forms can be found on the town’s website.

Theriault said the committee hopes the promotion is successful enough to become an annual event.

“What we’re hoping is that we have this first year and the event gets bigger and bigger and bigger every year,” she said.
