Letter: S. Portland rep responds to opponent

I would like to clarify a statement from my independent opponent in last week’s southern Forecaster about to my vote on MaineCare cuts in the biennium budget.

When the governor gave us his biennium budget proposal in the last legislative session, it contained drastic cuts across the board, including MaineCare. My fellow Democrats and I felt these cuts were too deep and hurtful to the citizens of Maine. After many caucuses and proposals sent back and forth between the parties a compromise was reached and passed, but was vetoed by the governor.

It is unfair to be criticized for this without a full understanding of the complicated process of negotiating a budget. I would further like to clarify that I firmly believe that health care is a human right, not a privilege, and have worked hard during my time in the Legislature to provide all Mainers with quality, affordable health care.

Rep. Terry K. Morrison
