PORTLAND — A Vassalboro man died early Sunday after the car he was driving crashed into a pile of gravel on Commercial Street, police said.

The crash killed Robert J. Hubbard, 23, and hospitalized his passenger, 24-year-old James Ronco. Ronco, whose address was not available, was listed in serious condition at Maine Medical Center.

Hubbard lost control of his 2008 Honda Civic at 1:26 a.m Sunday as he was driving westbound on Commercial Street, near Beach Street, according to police.

The accident is under investigation, and police ask anyone with information to call 874-8532.
