South Portland Police Sgt. Steve Webster (also the city fire inspector), and Deputy Fire Chief James Wilson view damage caused by an early morning fire at 554 Main St. on Wednesday.
The building in the Thornton Heights was destroyed by a fire reported at 4:15 a.m. Fire Chief Kevin Guimond said no one was injured in the blaze that gutted a building housing a chiropractic office on the first floor and a residence on the upper floors.
Guimond said firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the eaves, and were hampered in their efforts fighting the fire after the roof collapsed.
Siding on the adjacent building at 558 Main St. was damaged by flames and heat. Firefighters broke down the door, woke up the residents and ordered them to leave, Guimond said.
"We were five minutes from seeing that building go up, too," he added.
All city fire department units responded to the blaze and were assisted by Portland firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maine Office of the State Fire Marshal.
