Portland graduates awarded scholarships

PORTLAND — Three recent graduates of Portland Public Schools have been awarded college scholarships from trusts administered by the city, it was announced Aug. 10.

Corey Carmichael, the 2010 valedictorian of Portland High School, will receive a scholarship of $1,700 from the James L. Rackleff Trust, which funds education for children of Portland residents. Carmichael is currently attending Swarthmore College.

Portland graduates Francis Myatt and Parker Robinson will receive scholarships totaling $7,940 from the Sylvan B. Phillips Trust, which funds education for needy young men living in Portland. Myatt is currently attending St. Joseph’s College of Maine, and Robinson will attend Southern Maine Community College in South Portland this fall.

The city awards scholarships from both grants based upon academic excellence, demonstrated need, letters of reference and an essay by the applicant.

“Rackleff and Phillips have left a wonderful legacy for Portland’s youth,” said Mary Zwolinski, a Portland resident and trustee of both trusts. “We are delighted to award these funds to such promising young adults for their continuing education.”
