BRUNSWICK — The Northwest Brunswick Neighborhood Association is offering a twist on the typical movie-going experience this summer, offering screenings outside.

Screens in Nathaniel Davis Park, off Pleasant Street, lit up at dusk for the first of two screenings in this year's inaugural Third Thursday Movies in the Park with the screening of “Captain America” on July 19. The second feature will be “Dolphin Tale,” on Aug. 16.

Louise Rosen, of the Northwest Brunswick Neighborhood Association, said the screenings are free and meant to exhibit the beauty of the park. Families are invited to picnic, play Frisbee or just relax in the park before shows begin at dusk.

“The park is not necessarily that well known in Brunswick, but it has so many wonderful qualities and attributes that (this is) a great way to show it off as a hidden treasure of Brunswick,” she said.

Gelato Fiasco, one of the local sponsors of the event, will run a concession stand at the screenings. There will also be more traditional move theater fare, with a popcorn stand manned by The Big Top Deli and a “movie theater-style” candy concession.

The park, tucked away in a residential area off Pleasant Street, is an ideal location for an outdoor film screening, said Rosen, a veteran of the television and film world. Surrounded on three sides by trees, the sloping lawns of the park create a "natural amphitheater."

The inaugural Third Thursday Movies in the Park features only two showings this summer, but if all goes well, Rosen said she hopes there will be more next summer.

“Next year we're really hoping that we can turn this into an even bigger event, with two to three movies each month,” she said. “The idea is a family night at no cost to the public.”
