Matilde “Baba” Pausa, 73: Her Smiling Eyes

PORTLAND — Matilde T. Pausa, 73, of Cumberland, died June 12 at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Havana, Cuba ,on October 14, 1938, to Mercedes Viamonte and Dr. Justo Pausa. She graduated from Apostolado del Sagrado Corazon High School, where she excelled academically, especially in mathematics.

In 1961, Pausa married Roberto Benito and together they had a daughter, Lourdes.

Pausa attended CUNY Hunter College and received a bachelor's degree in art history. Pausa moved to Ohio to be closer to her daughter. There she became an administrative assistant at Ohio State University's Department of Internal Medicine and later at the Department of Orthodontics. She retired in 2000 and moved to Maine.

Pausa volunteered at Maine Medical Center. She enjoyed swimming at the Freeport YMCA, practicing Tai Chi, and playing dominoes at the Cumberland Public Library with friends. Pausa will be remembered for many outstanding qualities including how she smiled with her eyes, especially when she would see her daughter and her grandchildren.

The family expressed grateful appreciation to Dr. Seth Blank, Dr. David Seder, Dr. Kurt Ebrahim and his nurse, Missy, for the outstanding care they gave Pausa throughout her illness.

Pausa is survived by her daughter, Lourdes Benito, and her husband, Dennis Caron; her grandchildren Cristina, Alexander and Benjamin; her sister, Nora Cambo, and her husband, Juan, and their children Nora, Pedro, Patricia and Monica; and her first husband, Roberto Benito.
