Public invited to meet Falmouth schools candidate

FALMOUTH — Residents have an opportunity Wednesday to meet a public candidate for superintendent of Falmouth Schools.

Geoff Bruno, who currently serves as an administrator for public schools in Saugus, Mass., will be available for a question-and-answer session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the library of Falmouth Elementary School, 58 Woodville Road. The session will also include introductory remarks by Bruno.

The School Board "requests and encourages feedback" on the public's impressions of Bruno and "is an essential component in the board's decision making process," according to a news release from School Board Chairman Andrew Kinley.

Bruno currently serves as executive director of curriculum, instruction and accountability at Saugus Public Schools. Previously, he served as principal of Belmonte Middle School in Saugus, and has also taught at elementary and high school levels, according to the release.

The candidate search began last September after current Superintendent Barbara Powers notified the School Board of her plan to retire, effective June 30. Powers, 62, has worked in the School Department for 16 years, including six as principal of Plummer-Motz School, five as assistant superintendent, and five in her current post. Previously, she served 18 years in Cape Elizabeth schools.

The board received applications from throughout the United States and vetted candidates through interviews and reference checks before focusing on Bruno, the release states.

"Due to a combination of factors, including the high standards set by the school committee, only one individual will be brought before the public at this time," the release states. "However, the decision making process is ongoing and the feedback we receive on this candidate is critical in determining the merits of Mr. Bruno as a candidate for the leadership of our district."
