Walter’s, a popular lunchtime spot for downtown workers, planned to reopen in its new, larger space Dec. 29. The restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner, is now located on Union Street, at 2 Portland Square.

Walter’s plans to be open until midnight and will offer a new bar menu. There’s also free parking for diners after 6 p.m. behind the building. The restaurant’s phone number is 871-9258.

Katahdin Restaurant, another longtime Portland restaurant, closed its High Street location and is moving to 27 Forest Ave., formerly Geo’s Patisserie. According to the restaurant’s Web site, Katahdin Wood Fire Grill and Bar will open “at the first of the year.”

Po’ Boys and Pickles is open at 1124 Forest Ave., where D’Angelo’s used to be. The menu includes fried oyster, fried shrimp and Creole sausage po’ boys, along with a muffaletta. Yum. Praline bacon and Boudin balls are on the sides list.

Deering Center’s favorite pizzeria, Siano’s, is adding a new location at 505 Fore St., once home to Portland Pie Co. and most recently Una. The new location is supposed to open Feb. 1, according to the restaurant’s Web site. There is also a Siano’s on Main Street in Freeport.

Also on Fore Street, a new club is going into the space most recently occupied by Prost, at the corner of Fore and Union streets. Velvet will become the newest tenant of the Old Port anchor.

Another Old Port location long known for attracting late night revelers is turning into a restaurant. The owners of Havana in downtown Bar Harbor are opening a second Cuban eatery in the old Iguana and Cake spaces on Wharf Street.

Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster Roll cafe opened earlier this month at 37 Exchange St., formerly JavaNet. Bean, a granddaughter of L.L. Bean, is offering quarter pounder lobster rolls, “Pause for Claws” salad, and sandwiches. Not sure if Bean has decided to forgo renaming lobster claws “cuddlers.”

Maine Coast Vineyards of Falmouth recently released their first red and white wines. Winemakers Steve Melchiskey and Nanci Kahn released a rose´ in August from their vineyard in West Falmouth. The wines are available in local shops including the Rosemont markets in Portland and Leavitt and Sons in Falmouth.

Downeast Magazine in its January edition ran a line-up of places to “Eat Like a Mainer.” Besides the usual suspects and dishes, included in the list is the mashed potato, bacon and scallion pizza from the relatively new Otto Pizza at 576 Congress St.

Portland Harbor Hotel’s annual Ice Bar event is Jan. 28-30 in the hotel’s courtyard. The event features ice sculptures, bars made of ice, fire pits to stay warm and specialty martinis, beer and wine. For more information go to portlandharborhotel.com.
