PORTLAND — New signs were installed last week to help visitors find their way around the waterfront, the Arts District and the Old Port.
The signs point to tourist attractions, including the Longfellow House and Victoria Mansion; to public transportation providers like Metro and Casco Bay Lines, and to landmarks including City Hall and Monument Square.
The 58 signs are the result of a Wayfinding Study led by the Portland Downtown District that was completed in 2008. The district paid for the study, signs and installation, and funding included a grant from the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation Committee.
Portland Downtown District unveiled the signs Nov. 20. They are located throughout the peninsula.
“PDD is extremely pleased to have these signs in the ground. Tourism is Portland’s number one industry and this sign system will encourage visitors whether from away or from our surrounding communities to park once and walk throughout downtown,” said Jan Beitzer, executive director for Portland Downtown District.
