SOUTH PORTLAND — Nellie Bakiewicz Glidden, 92, formerly of South Portland, died peacefully April 27 at Country Village Assisted Living in Casco.

She was born in Portland on Nov. 19, 1922, to Ignacy S. and Magdalena M. Dobrowolski Bakiewicz. Nellie spent her youth amid the Polish community of Portland’s West End, and was a member of St. Louis Church. She attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School.

In 1944, she married Arnold Glidden at St. Louis Church. The couple relocated to South Portland, where they resided until his death in 1963. She then worked for many years processing seafood on Portland’s waterfront. She also worked at B&M Baked Bean Co. and at Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland before retiring.

Glidden was a devoted homemaker whose talents included cooking, gardening and crocheting. In her later years, she enjoyed TV shows such as “Jeopardy,” and played rummy and Bingo every chance she got.

In addition to her husband, Glidden was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Dickson and Dorothy Dyro, and two brothers, Edward and Michael Bakiewicz.

She is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 30 at St. Louis Church. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, in South Portland.
