BATH — The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a $16 million contract modification for more construction work on the DDG-1000 Zumwalt Class destroyer program.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations committees, announced the award Tuesday.

BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said on Wednesday that the award is for advanced material procurement for the second of three DDG-1000 vessels to be built at the shipyard.

BIW is currently constructing the first of the three, which is to be delivered to the Navy in 2013. The shipyard will build the majority of all three vessels, while Northrop Grumman will provide pieces such as the composite deckhouse and helicopter hangar.
