YARMOUTH —
The investigation into the fire that destroyed a Route 1 office building and displaced more than two dozen businesses on Jan. 2 continued this week.
Police Chief Michael Morrill said the Yarmouth fire and police departments met with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, representatives of the Office of the State Fire Marshal and members of the York and Kittery police and fire departments as recently as Tuesday morning.
“Hopefully some of the pieces are coming together after a week of meeting and investigating,” Morrill said.
Police would like to talk to any motorists who were driving by 500 Route 1 on Jan. 2 between 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. In particular, Morrill said, the police would like to find a woman who was walking nearby between 8:20 and 8:30 p.m. He said the woman is not considered a suspect, but may have information for the police.
Fire Chief Byron Fairbanks said the building owned by Art Dyer was initially taken over by the Yarmouth Fire Department for the investigation, but was returned to the owner this week.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said while a fire in York was declared arson, the cause of the one in Yarmouth remains undetermined while the Maine crime lab processes evidence.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Paul Martin at the Yarmouth Police Department, 846-3333.
