FALMOUTH — A Freeport man was assaulted and robbed Tuesday night in the parking of the Portland Country Club.
Police Department Lt. John Kilbride said the 56-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed, had arrived just before 7 p.m. at the Foreside Road club for a card game with friends. He stepped out of his car and saw one and possibly two men with sweatshirt hoods covering much of their faces coming toward him.
“When he exited his vehicle, they ran toward him real fast and before you know it, they were immediately throwing punches,” Kilbride said. “They got him to the ground and stole his wallet.”
The man was treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland for facial cuts and bruises. Kilbride said police do not believe the attackers, who drove away, used weapons other than their fists.
He said there are “some witnesses” to the attack, and police are interviewing them and planned to re-interview the victim Wednesday morning.
Officers will also be reviewing security video from the country club, Kilbride said.
