CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Clam flats surrounding much of Chebeague Island have been closed effective Jan. 22.
The closure, which affects all Chebeague flats except for the Cricks and the Great Bar, was ordered because the 12-year shoreline survey has expired. Flats surrounding all of Long, Hope, and Cliff islands and the
northwestern side of Bates Island are also included in the closure
ordered by the Department of Marine Resources.
An updated survey is expected to be completed this spring by the DMR; the flats will remain closed until the survey is approved.
For a map of the closed areas, see the Chebeague Island Web site, chebeague.org.
